چکیده

This paper presents a study of the effects of syntax and melodic configuration on turntaking in Southern British English. Using dialogue materials, two perception experiments were carried out. In the first, subjects heard dialogue fragments in which syntactic completeness and melodic contour were systematically varied, and were asked whether they expected a subsequent turn exchange or not. In the second, subjects were presented with short speaker exchanges taken from the same material, and asked whether they thought the first speaker had intended to cede the turn or not. The results suggest that syntactic completion or non-completion is the main factor in predicting turn-taking behaviour. Only one melodic contour, the high level tone H* %, appears to operate as a turn holding device, regardless of whether the utterance is grammatically complete or not. The results of this study were found to be similar to those of a study of Dutch turn-taking.

Pitch accents, boundary tones and turn-taking in dutch map task dialogues

The present paper reports on an investigation of Dutch Map Task dialogues, looking for specific melodic turn-keeping cues. The materials were divided into so-called Inter Pausal Units (cf. [1]), and all IPU boundaries were labeled as instances of either turn-keeping or turn-changing. The pitch accents and boundary tones preceding the IPU boundaries were labeled in the ToDI system [2]. Results i...

Melodic contour identification and music perception by cochlear implant users.

Research and outcomes with cochlear implants (CIs) have revealed a dichotomy in the cues necessary for speech and music recognition. CI devices typically transmit 16-22 spectral channels, each modulated slowly in time. This coarse representation provides enough information to support speech understanding in quiet and rhythmic perception in music, but not enough to support speech understanding i...

Cross-Linguistic Study of the Production of Turn-Taking Cues in American English and Argentine Spanish

We present the results of a series of machine learning experiments aimed at exploring the differences and similarities in the production of turn-taking cues in American English and Argentine Spanish. An analysis of prosodic features automatically extracted from 21 dyadic conversations (12 En, 9 Sp) revealed that, when signaling Holds, speakers of both languages tend to use roughly the same comb...

Perceptions of an Arabic Turn-Taking Cue 1 Running head: PERCEPTIONS OF AN ARABIC TURN-TAKING CUE American and Arab perceptions of an Arabic turn-taking cue

Languages differ in the way that speakers coordinate their interaction moment-by-moment, and this can cause intercultural misunderstandings. We explore this in the domain of listening behavior. One way that listeners show interest and attention is by producing back-channel feedback (short utterances such as okay and hmm) at appropriate times, and these times are determined, in part, by the inte...
